While other ancient literatures all see reality in essentially the same terms of one-ness with the earth, the Bible differs radically on all the main points and cannot reasonably be considered mythology. Rather, the Bible asserts a two-ness as a corrective to those who reject the Old Testament’s testimony about a transcendent God who breaks into time and space and reveals himself in and through human activity.

by Scott Cherry—

In the Hebrew scriptures (the Tanach, or Tawrat) there was a great prophet named Isaiah who wrote about the kind of fasting that God respects, the kind that demonstrates the spirit of selflessness and moral consistency for the sake of a higher cause. Here's an excerpt from chapter 58 of the prophet's tome, in the voice of GOD himself:

“Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?
"Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?"

Nothing shapes your life more than your worldview. Everybody has one, it's the lens through which you view and interpret the world, i.e. absolutely everything. Some call it a philosophy of life. It is is similar to a belief system but bigger. It includes all the things you believe and value even if you are an atheist. So, what's yours?

Can you get your mind around it'? Can you put it into words? Can you analyze your worldview and those of others? If you're like many others this is difficult for you, and that's why I want to talk about it. In this talk I want to help you recognize the elements of a worldview in order to evaluate one, especially your own. For example, all worldviews have core presuppositions about reality. A worldview can be coherent or less coherent, and it can be consistent or inconsistent. Based on these three criteria alone your worldview can be strong, mediocre or weak. Therefore it can give you either confidence about the meaning and purpose of life, or a lack of it. And who doesn't want confidence? If you've never or rarely thought about your own worldview then this talk is for you. I've spent a lot of time developing my own, and I can tell you it's worth it.  Join me as we critique our own worldviews and learn how to help others critique theirs. You'll be really glad you did.

Fasting can be hard, even extreme. This 3:41-minute video beautifully captures in art an episode of extreme fasting in total isolation and deprivation. Watch it and read the accompanying article within. Then ponder, "How? ...Why?  What is that about?"
